The Managing Director of the Airline; Allan Kilavuka, revealed that they are in the process of negotiating with the lessors who will be billed as soon as the planes are flying.l, adding that they are looking to return the aircraft which is not in use or at least reduce the rental charges.

Kenya Airways also made it known that a company has already expressed interest and will be taking one of the plans that haven’t been in use.

Mr. Allan Kilavuka said, “We are also requesting the lease firms to allow us to convert some of the aircraft into cargo carriers, especially the Dreamliners and other wide body planes. The cabinet conversion will involve temporarily removal of seats. But it has to be approved by the lessors.”

He added that the reduced number of travellers had in turn lowered the available seat kilometres to 15 percent as opposed to the numbers recorded in 2019. This also played a role in the airline looking reduce its overall number of aircrafts.

The national carrier expects that it will operate at 38 percent capacity by the end of 2020, operate at 60 percent capacity by 2022 and return to operating to full capacity by 2023.
