NAIROBI, Kenya, July 21 – Uganda Airlines has placed its first-ever order with Boeing, signing a deal for eight aircraft as it seeks to expand its regional and international network.
The airline will acquire four 737-8 MAX aircraft and four 787-9 Dreamliners, a move aimed at increasing capacity and modernising its fleet to meet growing passenger demand across East Africa and beyond.
Uganda Airlines Chief Executive Officer Ato Girma Wake said the acquisition will strengthen the airline’s role in positioning Entebbe as a regional aviation hub.
“This commitment with Boeing marks a defining step in Uganda Airlines’ growth journey and in our broader ambition to position Entebbe as a strategic aviation hub for the region,” Wake said.
He said the new aircraft will improve connectivity to regional, continental and international destinations while supporting trade, tourism, investment and cargo transport.
The 737-8 MAX, which seats between 160 and 180 passengers, will be deployed on routes across Africa as well as services to the Middle East and India. The 787-9 Dreamliner will serve long-haul destinations in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
Boeing Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing Brad McMullen said the aircraft will support Uganda Airlines’ expansion plans.
“These airplanes offer efficiency, range and versatility to help Uganda Airlines strengthen and expand its network,” he said.
According to Boeing, the new aircraft consume 20 to 25 percent less fuel than the planes they are expected to replace.
Uganda Airlines currently operates flights to 17 destinations in 13 countries from its hub at Entebbe International Airport.
