Telecommunications giant; Safaricom has changed the prices for a number of its services and products. The move is aimed at reflecting the corresponding new change in how internet data services and telephone services are taxed.
The tax changes came into effect on Wednesday the 7th of July 2021. Said tax changes will have an affect on every out of bundle voice call, SMS, internet data, along with integrated plans.
The tax changes will also have a similar effect on the price of international SMS, roaming calls, international calls, as well as the Fibre To The Business (FTTB) and Fibre To The Home (FTTH) plans.
The prices of all personal postpaid services and products has also been changed.
The announcement by Safaricom is coming not long after fellow telecommunications company; Airtel announced barely two (2) weeks ago, that it will be increasing its headline voice tariff to 2.78 Kenyan Shillings.
The prices for consumer internet data on Safaricom, will however remain the same.
Voice calls on Safaricom will now go at a cost of 4.87 Kenyan Shillings per minute during peak hours and 2.50 Kenyan Shillings per minute during off peak hours. This is significantly higher than the previous rates of 3.50 Kenyan Shillings per minute during peak hours and 1.80 Kenyan Shillings per minute during off peak hours.
The cost of sending one SMyS (Single Short Message) will now stand at 1.20 Kenyan Shillings from the previous rate of 87 Cents.
The price for browsing with your airtime (that is, without internet bundles), will also experience a significant increase at a similar level to what occurred with the price adjustment for voice calls.
On the side of Fibre To The Home (FTTH) Safaricom’s lowest bandwidth offer of 8 MBs (Megabytes) per second will now come at a rate of 2,999 Kenyan Shillings per month. For the Diamond plan or premium package of 100 MBs (Megabytes) users will now be charged a total of 12,499 Kenyan Shillings.
Telkom which is another telecommunications company with operations in Kenya has changed its headline cost of voice calls as well. It now stands at 2.78 Kenyan Shillings. Its SMS Single Short Message) cost has subsequently been adjusted to 1.15 Kenyan Shillings.
Telkom Kenya’s non-bundle mobile data cost will now stand at 4.50 Kenyan Shillings per MB (Megabyte). The prices for its data bundles and voice bundles will however not be changed.
