Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers National (KUPPET) Chairman Omboko Milemba has asked the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the union before the national examinations kick off.
On Sunday, August 9, 2026, at his home in Esirulo, Emuhaya, Milemba engaged with KUPPET delegates from Vihiga, Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Kisumu, and Nairobi. He emphasized the importance of establishing clear payment and supervision timelines for teachers during exam invigilation and marking, along with other examination responsibilities.
“I, therefore, urge teachers not to rush to download and fill KNEC forms before the necessary engagement with the union. KNEC must engage with us directly and address these critical issues instead of waiting until it is too late,” Milemba said.
Milemba said KNEC has for a long time frustrated teachers involved in exam supervision and marking by delaying paying their dues. “It will not be business as usual. We want an MOU that spells out rates, mode, and timelines of payment before exams begin,” he added.
He congratulated the Western region delegates on their successful election and thanked them for supporting him in defending the KUPPET National Chair position.
“Western Kenya stood out, spoke with one voice, rallied behind one of their own, and extended that support beyond the region. For the first time in recent times, Western Kenya demonstrated what unity can achieve. I am deeply grateful,” he said.
He urged teachers to protect the unity ahead of Regional Council elections, saying that they should consult, agree, and speak with one voice. He maintained that a united union will always be a stronger union.
On employment, Milemba said KUPPET will continue to push for the confirmation of 24,000 intern teachers and the employment of 20,000 more tutors.
He also raised concerns over the Digital Health Authority system, saying it has not worked for teachers seeking medical services, and gave the Ministry of Health 14 days to respond.
“KUPPET is united by shared goals and a common vision. Let us remain united, let us remain focused, and let us continue standing together for the welfare and dignity of every teacher,” he added.
