The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has finalized a 17 Billion Kenyan Shillings contract with China Communication Construction Company Limited. The contract is in regards to the construction of the 453 Kilometre Lamu to Ijara to Garissa Road. The scope of work will also include the construction of all associated spur roads to an all weather gravel standard.
The tender has already been signed by the Director General of the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA); Engineer Peter Mundinia alongside the General Manager M/S China Communication Construction Company Limited.
The project documents which were posted on the official Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) website revealed that the road section is a part of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor Development Project. Construction on the entire road project will go on for a period of 3 years before completion.
The road project constitutes the beginning part of the 1,250 Kilometre road from Lamu to the Sudan LAPSSET corridor. The aim is to boost the efficiency of road transportation along the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor and also provide the missing link between Lamu Port and A2 roads.
The road link will boost accessibility to Lamu Port as well, and the proposed resort cities along the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor. It will also improve security operations and adequately respond to security concerns within the North Eastern Region.
The first section of the project will include constructing the 257 Kilometre Lamu to Garissa road which will form the initial part of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport (LAPSSET) corridor. The road is situated in the Eastern Coastal region of Kenya, which runs from Lamu to Garissa towards the Northern direction.
The second section will include the construction of the Budhei to Basuba to Kiunga (A11) Road. The project road will be situated in Lamu County of Coast Region with the works situated along with the already existing Hindi to Budhei to Basuba to Kiunga (A11) road in Lamu County.
The project road will be starting from the Budhei Junction Centre and will run easterly to Kiunga. It will be approximately 110 kilometres.
An additional 20 kilometres of road is also being proposed for the construction of the township roads in Kiunga.
According to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) tender document No- KeNHA/2405/2021 which is dated April of 2021 section 3 of the project t involves the construction of the Ijara to Hulugho Road.
The project road is situated in Garissa County of Coast Region. It begins at Ijara Centre (Junction B93/A10) and moves in an Easterly direction to terminate at Hulugho Centre.
The works are situated along the existing road with an estimated length of 100 kilometres. An additional 10 kilometre road is also being proposed for township roads.
The contract period for the entire project, will be 36 months including the 24 months for Phase One which also involves works supervision as well as the construction of Lamu to Ijara to Garissa (257 Kilometres) to the gravel standards within the contract period.
The construction of Lamu to Ijara to Garissa (A10) Road and Associated Spur Roads to All Weather Gravel Standard will span 12 months of the contract period. The spur roads will also be completed within the period the contract will go on for.
