All Boda Boda riders in Kenya’s capital; Nairobi, will now receive biometric plates which will have unique colour codes in order to facilitate easier identification. This announcement was made by Governor Ann Kananu.
The decision is coming after a meeting was carried out on the 17th of March 2022 between the Boda Boda Associations and the City Hall. A series of new regulations were agreed upon in a bid to streamline the sector which has been faced with accidents, indiscipline and crime.
Governor Ann Kananu stated that an agreement was reached for Boda Boda operators to have their motorcycles fitted with the digital numbers adding that each of the 17 sub counties in Nairobi will have different colour codes so as to aid easier identification.
According to Ms Kananu the special plates will when scanned, be able to reveal the name ID number and phone number of each rider.
The state of the art number plates will come equipped with anti-counterfeit features like laser markers, watermarks and holograms which will aid the police in effectively tracing information on owners of motorcycles as well as their areas of operation. It will also help reduce the crimes associated with motorcycle riders.
Governor Ann Kananu made it known that, “We have agreed to work together and with the leaders agreeing to organise their members by ensuring they are all registered across the 17 sub-Counties in Nairobi. Each will be given a county registration card and sticker with a personal identification number.”
The City Hall gave the Boda Boda Associations a limited timeframe to set up a committee which will be tasked with the implementation of what has been agreed on starting of course with the registration, to benchmark with nations like Rwanda so as to borrow best practices.
Ms Ann Kananu singled out the fact that the digital number plates will make it possible to know real motorcycles riders and those who pretend to be but are actually criminals.

In her words, “This will help us identify the real boda boda riders and the rogues who have infiltrated the industry. There are people who pose as boda boda riders yet they are criminals. However, they have assured us that they will identify such elements and have them arrested.”
Areas like Thika in Kiambu county and Ruiru in Vihiga County have also implemented similar strategies.

Governor Ann Kananu revealed that the county government will be releasing all impounded motorcycles that were seized over petty offenses. She however added that the crackdown launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta on rogue riders, will continue.
