Fuel prices are a major concern for consumers around the world, and Africa is no exception, fuel prices are influenced by a lot of factors ranging from oil reserves, subsidies, and refining capacity. In many African countries, fuel prices are a significant portion of household budgets. However, there are a few African countries with rich oil reserves that have relatively low fuel prices when compared to global prices. In this blog post, we are going to be exploring African countries with some of the lowest prices for PMS (petrol).
- Libya
Libya has the lowest fuel prices in Africa and is ranked in second position globally. With an average price of approximately $0.032 per liter of petrol. Libya’s low fuel prices can be attributed to its large oil reserves and its government’s heavily subsidizing the price of petrol in the country, almost making it free. Despite the country’s political and social challenges, the people of Libya still enjoy one of the cheapest prices of gasoline globally.
- Egypt
Egypt has the second-lowest fuel prices in Africa. The average price of a liter of gasoline is around 15 EGP in Egypt, which is approximately $0.31. Egypt’s low fuel prices are due to its large oil reserves, as it’s a major player in the oil and gas industry in Africa, and its government’s subsidies on fuel, which have been gradually phased out over the years, but the price of fuel remains cheap because of its high refining capacity.
- Angola
Angola is another African country with low fuel prices. The average price of a liter of gasoline in Angola is around 300 Angola Kwanza, which is $0.32. Angola’s low fuel prices are also due to its large oil reserves and subsidies offered by the government, though most of the subsidies have been gradually reduced to ease pressure on its national budget. Angolans still enjoy cheap fuel.
- Algeria
Algeria has the fourth-lowest fuel prices in Africa and is the second North African country on this list. The average price of a liter of gasoline in Algeria is around $0.347. Algeria’s low fuel prices are due to the country being a major oil and gas exporter, and the government leverages this wealth to provide cheap and affordable fuel to its citizens at large.
- Sudan
Sudan is another country that enjoys access to cheap fuel in Africa, with an average price of $0.70 per liter. Sudan has kept its price of fuel low through government regulation and its local refining capacity. Though Sudan continues to face economic challenges, it has managed to keep its price of fuel low and accessible for all its citizens.
- Ethiopia
Ethiopia is one of the countries with cheap fuel in Africa; though not an oil-producing country, its citizens still enjoy cheap fuel mainly due to government subsidies, and the country’s government still regulates the market. With an average price of 82.6 Ethiopian birr, approximately $0.719. Ethiopia is the sixth country with the cheapest fuel in Africa.
- Nigeria
Nigeria is Africa’s largest oil producer, and it has a large oil reserve. The Nigerian government has a history of subsidizing the price of fuel in the country, which has led to economic strains and inefficiencies. Though the government recently announced the removal of the subsidies, the country continues to enjoy access to cheap fuel. The average price of a liter of petrol in Nigeria is around $0.722. This is significantly lower than the global average of $1.30 per liter.Â
- Tunisia
In Tunisia, with an average price of $0.829 per liter of gasoline, its citizens still enjoy access to cheap fuel in Africa. Though Tunisia imports a significant portion of its fuel needs, the government has implemented policies to keep prices manageable for consumers. Recent reforms have led to slight increases in fuel prices as the country aims to reduce its budget deficit by cutting fuel subsidies. However, Tunisia still offers affordable fuel compared to many other countries in the region, thanks to careful regulation and price controls.
- Liberia
Liberia imports most of its fuel needs, but it has managed to keep the price of fuel cheap for its citizens. With an average price of $0.914 per liter, the citizens continue to enjoy cheap fuel despite the country’s infrastructure challenges.
- Gabon
Gabon, a small oil-producing nation with significant oil reserves, has an average price of $1.001 per liter of gasoline. The government continues to maintain moderate fuel subsidies and invests in refining capacity to reduce dependence on imports. The African country continues to enjoy cheap fuel when compared to other African countries.Â
In Conclusion
The African countries with the lowest fuel prices are Nigeria, Angola, Libya, Algeria, and Egypt. These countries have low fuel prices due to a number of factors, including their large oil reserves and their governments’ subsidies on fuel. Other notable countries include Ghana, Benin, Tanzania, Namibia, and Togo.
