Everything You Should Know About Samsung’s Foldable phone
In an era where it appears the smartphone industry has reached a stable point with most of the products from the major manufacturing Brands starting to look the same, it appears we have the next Big Step in innovation (insert drumroll) the Foldable SmartPhone.
While other players in the game like Apple and Huawei have secured patents for foldable devices (with Huawei already teasing a foldable phone of their own days ago), at the forefront of this innovation is Samsung, with its Galaxy Fold.
Samsung Galaxy Fold
The Galaxy Fold which essentially combines the portability of phones with the screen real estate of tablets, features 4.6-inch external display and a 7.3-inch foldable screen on the inside. It features a 512 GB internal storage but no memory card slot, 12GB RAM, Qualcomm 7nm 0ctacore processor Android Pie 9.0, a fingerprint sensor on the side, fast charge and two batteries that are separated by the fold but when combined in the Android operating system give 4380 mAh.
The Galaxy Fold, has a strong backbone at the back with a hinge system comprised of multiple interlocking gears which are hidden at the rear and allow the device to switch or transform from tablet mode to phone mode. Samsung claims the Galaxy Fold will be able to fold at least 200,000 times, which is basically 5 years of use, if you fold it a 100 times per day.
The back of the Galaxy Fold, features a three camera system which will be used for both the phone mode and the tablet mode. The three camera system includes a 16 megapixel ultra wide camera, with a 12 megapixel wide-angle camera and a 12 megapixel telephoto camera.
The front of the device, features a 10 megapixel camera for selfies.
The Galaxy Fold is also able to run three different applications simultaneously and makes use of an application continuity system to adjust apps when switiching from tablet mode to phone mode. WhatsApp, Microsoft Office and YouTube have been optimized for the new displays and as well as the tablet and phone modes. Samsung, is also releasing the Galaxy Fold in four different colours; black, silver, green and blue.
While Samsung is not the only smartphone manufacturer creating devices that fold, it is definitely one of the first ones to official announce one, including release dates. Xiaomi teased a foldable device of its own recently as well and although some tech enthusiasts claim it is the best concept so far, it was only a tease. Nowhere near an official announcement.
Huawei is also reportedly planning to release a foldable phone this year, Lenovo has begun to tease its own prototype, LG is also developing flexible (maybe even foldable) OLED Displays and Televisions that can roll into a box. With all of those plans already in motion, looks like Foldable phones are making a return with a Bang and Samsung will have serious competition in no time.
The Galaxy Fold devices, are expected to retail for $1,980, starting from April 26th 2019.
Oh and did I mention it will not have a headphone jack?
