According to news reports, the Chief Executive Officer of Safaricom; Bob Collymore, has died at his home in the early hours of Monday the 1st of July 2019.
He is survived by his wife and four children.
The Guyanese-born British citizen, first took a medical leave in October of 2017 to fight cancer.
Safaricom’s Chairman; Nicholas Ng’ang’a said in a statement that the CEO, “… has been undergoing treatment for his condition since then in different hospitals and most recently at Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi.”
Nicholas Ng’ang’a added that, “In recent weeks, his condition worsened and he succumbed to the cancer at his home in the early hours of Monday,”.
Mr. Bob Collymore has been the head of East and Central Africa’s biggest telecommunications service provider (Safaricom), since November of 2010 when he took over from Michael Joseph.
Kenya’s President; Uhuru Kenyatta, was among the very first leaders to mourn Mr. Collymore’s death, noting that the country has lost a distinguished corporate leader.
In a tweet on Monday the 1st of July 2019, the President said, “It is with deep sadness that I have this morning received news of the death of Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore after years of battling cancer. As a country, we’ve lost a distinguished corporate leader whose contribution to our national wellbeing will be missed,”.
In December 2018, President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Bob Collymore as a member of the Kenya Vision 2030 Delivery Board for a three year term.
In May this year, the Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki, appointed Mr. Collymore to the National Cancer Institute board.
