The Governor of Machakos County; Alfred Mutua, governor has ordered the closure of all meat sections in Naivas supermarkets within the county, after the discovery of excess chemical additives in the meat sold in one of its outlets, was made.
In a statement issued Thursday the 18th Of July 2019, Dr. Alfred Mutua made it known that lab analysis of meat samples taken from Naivas supermarket at Gateway Mall in Mavoko, revealed that the meat contained 3,286 milligrams of an additive (Sodium Metabisulfite) that should not be used on meat.
The Governor via the statement said, “I direct my officers in collaboration with national government officers to move with speed to all supermarkets in Machakos County for investigations and advisory to the public,”.
He added that the meat sections will remain closed until an okay to open is issued by public health officers.
Random meat samples were collected from various outlets for analysis at the National Public Health labs.
All the public health departments of Machakos counties, were also directed to undertake heightened surveillance in all butcheries, supermarkets, meat processors, as well as other food operators, in order to ascertain any presence of other additives not permitted for use in meat and meat products.
The state further added that the results will be shared publicly once they are out.
