The Nairobi-Kisumu railway that resumed its operation in mid December 2021 has finally purchased new trains due to the rising demand. The seven new trains have gained popularity as railway transport is perceived to be accident free. The purchase has been necessitated by the rise in the number of commuters as stated by the Kisumu Railway Regional Manager Michael Disi Sayid. The seven trains bought from China will arrive in Kenya amid next month, this will enable transportation which was previously once a week to thrice a week. The railway transport had its station lands reclaimed from artisans and fishmongers. The growing railway transport has by far reduced the previous road congestions and cut road accidents by a great percentage.
The commissioned railway transport that resumed its operation is composed of a first class section that charges Kshs 2000 and a regular section charging a fee of Kshs 600. By December all the seats were pre-booked as the railway route come back to business, this was a major factor that necessitated the purchase of the seven. Fare charged by the railway cooperation is relatively cheap as compared to the other transport networks.
