The greatly anticipated construction of the Mombasa Special Economic Zone is to begin as the Kenyan Government has now begun to invite bidders to carry out the implementation of the project.
The Kenya Ports Authority was responsible for floating the international tender which is worth 32.4 billion Kenyan Shillings. Said tender will be financed through a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The Kenya Ports Authority made it known that the Kenyan Government had signed the loan on the 27th of February 2020.

Based on the terms of agreement all bidders who are qualified, must be of Japanese Nationality for the prime contractor. Sub-contractors can however, be from any other nationality.

In a situation where the Prime contractor is a Joint Venture (JV) said Joint Venture (JV) will also qualify as long as the Nationality of the Lead Partner is Japanese, the nationality of the other partners are either Japanese or Kenyan, and that the total share of work for the Japanese partners in the Joint Venture (JV) is more than fifty (50) percent of the entire contract amount.
The construction of the Mombasa Special Economic Zone whose completion date is set for 2026 will also include the creation of a Free Trade Zone, a mega industrial zone which will make it possible for top players and other countries in the region to allocation for pieces of land for the creation of the strategic depots, a logistics hub, and a free port.
The Mombasa Port currently caters to a number of countries in East Africa including South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda.

The Mombasa Special Economic Zone is a part of the industrialization plan for Kenya which is expected to take a period of ten (10) years. It is also spurred on by the revised draft of SEZ regulations (2019) that provides incentives to companies which will operate in the Mombasa Special Economic Zone.
