The Kenya Bureau of Standard (KEBS) has ordered Menengai, Kapa Oil, Pwani Oil and Bidco Africa to recall a number of their cooking oil products as a result of their failure to comply with the standards put in place.
The Kenya Bureau of Standard (KEBS) did not however reveal the level to which each of the affected products violated the standard KS EAS 769: KS 2019 Fortified Edible Oils and Fats-Specification.
In a letter by the Kenya Bureau of Standard (KEBS) that was written to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Retail Traders Association; Wambui Mbarire, it stated that the decision was made in a bid to protect the consumers from unknowingly purchasing substandard products in the market.

The letter was done on Wednesday the 21st of September 2022.
Kapa Oil Refineries was ordered to recall Rina Oil, Tilly cooking fat and Postman Oil. Pwani Oil was ordered to recall three (3) of its cooking oil brands; Salit, Fresh Fri with Garlic, and Fresh Fri.

For Bidco, it was ordered to recall Pure Olive Gold Oil and Bahari Fry Oil. Menengai was ordered to recall its Top Fri Oil.
The letter by the Kenya Bureau of Standard (KEBS) reads, “Kindly note that this is not a ban on the brands but a temporary suspension to facilitate protection of consumers from potentially unsafe products, safeguard economic interest of manufacturers of compliant brands and to allow the manufacturers of non-compliant brands to initiate and put in place effective corrective action under Kebs supervision.”

The Kenya Bureau of Standard (KEBS) added that the affected products will only be allowed back on shelves nationwide, when they have been cleared to be compliant.
