In a move which has been seen by observers as a bold one especially considering the growing trade ban wars between China and the United States, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Huawei; Ren Zhengfei, has proposed that the technology giant should consider sharing their 5G technology.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), made this known during an interview with The Economist at the company’s Shenzen offices.
Mr. Ren Zhengfei stated that after buying the 5G tech (a purchase which could potentially cost tens of billions of dollars), the buyer which he would prefer to be a Western company, would also have access to Huawei’s existing 5G patents which currently rank second only to Samsung, as well as the company’s licenses and code, in addition to production know how, techincal blueprints and the ability to tweak the source code.
Huawei has made it clear that while neither it nor the Chinese government would have control over any infrastructure that the buyer builds, the company (Huawei), would still however, keep its existing contracts and also sell its own 5G kits.
Ren Zhengfei does not believe an American company’s purchase of Huawei tech, would threaten its market dominance. He stated that it is through Huawei’s faster shipping of products, its low prices and its willingness to supply to regions where Western companies are afraid of venturing into, that will make Huawei stand out.
The CEO hopes that the purchase will give birth to an equal rival to Huawei and do away with the fears associated with a Chinese company supplying the gear for most of the world’s new mobile phone networks.
The CEO added that, “A balanced distribution of interests is conducive to Huawei’s survival… 5G represents speed and countries that have speed will move forward rapidly. On the contrary, countries that give up speed and excellent connectivity technology may see an economic slowdown.”
When asked if the idea is a sign of desperation as pressure mounts on its consumer business front, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) says it’s not.
The Billionaire believes that through the sale of Huawei’s 5G tech, could drive the company towards making newer and even better tech.
