A quick recap for those who missed the first and second articles and are wondering what a Work Permit is, it is a document which is issued by the Director of Immigration Services.
A Work Permit gives foreigners in Kenya the ability to actively engage in business, professional employment, trade, farming, as well as missionary activities.
Every Foreign national who is interested in working in the East African nation of Kenya, is required by law to obtain a work permit.
While there are different types of work permits in Kenya, this article will be focusing on the Class I which is for approved religious or charitable activities (KEP/I) Work Permit as stated earlier.
Class I Work Permits are the work permits which are issued to foreign nationals whose presence in the country will be of benefit to Kenya and who are members of institutions registered under the Society’s Act and who are engaged as a missionaries. It is also issued to member of companies limited by guarantees, and members of a trust registered under the Trustees Act and approved by the Government of Kenya.
Requirements For A Class I Work Permit In Kenya
For your Class I Work Permit application, please make sure that you have:

- A duly filled (completed) and signed Form 25 online form. Ensure that you print out the form at the end of your online application session.
- Two copies of a signed and detailed cover letter from the company or organization, addressed to the Director of Immigration Services.
- A Copy of your valid national passport.
- Two (2) recent coloured passport sized coloured photographs of you.
- Your current Immigration status if you are already in Kenya.
- Copy of any previous permit(s) and or pass(es) that you may have had.
- A copy Registration certificate of the Organization.
- Copied of certified academic and professional certificates of the applicant.

Please note that all Documents in foreign languages must be translated into English by either your Embassy, the Public Notary, or any other authorized or recognized institution.
How To Apply For A Class I Work Permit In Kenya
To apply for your Class I Work Permit in Kenya, simply:

- Create a login account within the Government of Kenya’s Single Sign-On – https://accounts.ecitizen.go.ke/login
- Next, log into your newly created account. It will grant you access to the eFNS (Electronic Foreign National Service) portal.
- As soon as you have logged into the eFNS (Electronic Foreign National Service) portal, select the ‘Apply Now’ option.
- Once done, select the ‘Submit Applications’ tab as well as the ‘Permit Issuance/Renewal’ tab.
Upon completion of your application process, an invoice will be generated. You will be able to see said invoice by clicking on the ‘Dashboard’ tab and then the ‘Payments’ tab.
If you are however unable to make your payment using any of the online modes, proceed to print your application form by selecting ‘Dashboard’ and then the ‘My Applications’ Tab.
Present your application form along with all the requirements at the Kenyan Immigration headquarters which is located at Nyayo house for processing.
An automatic notification regarding the progress of your application, will subsequently be sent to you via email as well as via your online account.
