For many Google users one main attraction has always been the free unlimited video uploads and photo uploads offered by Google Photos, alongside its backups offered in a compressed format. That feature is however going to be a thing of the past as the technology giant has announced that will no longer be offering the feature, from the 1st of June 2021.
From the 1st of June 2021 all files that users upload to Google Photos will go to the 15GB default storage that users get with each new Google account. If you already have a Google One subscription however, the files will go to that.
This change will affect all Google Photos across board. This includes Android, Desktop and Apple’s very own iOS.
Before the only files that went to the free 15GB default storage, were images that were uploaded in the uncompressed original quality preset. Images which were uploaded in Google’s compressed ‘High’ quality preset remained free. With the new announcement, all images; uncompressed original quality preset and compressed ‘High’ quality preset alike, will now go to the free 15GB default storage.
It is important to note that this change will only affect images that are uploaded after the 1st of June 2021 and will not have any impact on photos uploaded before the said date of implementation.
You will also not be instantly required or expected to begin paying from the 1st of June 2021. If you have not started using your free 15GB default storage that came with your Google account or if you use it but still have sufficient space left, you can continue uploading until that storage finishes. Once you have used up the free default storage, you will then be given the option of starting a subscription for any of the available Google One plans in order to continue uploading your files.
Bear in mind that if you have gone past your storage limit for more than two years or if you have not been actively using the service for more than two years, Google may remove your content across its multiple services.
Users of Google’s Pixel smartphones, will still be able to access unlimited and free backup for all your videos and photos regardless.
In June 2021 the technology giant; Google will also offer its users a a tool which will essentially help them manage their backed up videos and photos. Users will be able to choose what they want to keep and what they would like to delete.
The tool will also let users highlight content like blurry or dark photos or large sized videos that they do not want to retain, automatically.
