Ambassador Erastus Mwencha has been appointed by Equity Bank Kenya as its new Board Chairman, a position which was previously occupied by Professor Isaac Macharia who has been appointed as the Board Chairman of Equity Group Holdings.
Before his appointment, Ambassador Erastus Mwencha was the Deputy Chairperson for the Africa Union Commission (AUC). As its Controlling Officer, he handled the finances and administration of the Africa Union Commission (AUC). He supervised the development of two Africa Union Commission (AUC) Strategic Plans. The first one was from 2009 to 2012, and the second was from 2012 to 2017. He also played a part in the development of Africa’s long-term vision of Agenda 2063.
Ambassador Erastus Mwencha was the Secretary-General of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) for a period of ten (10) years, during which he played a large role in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) becoming the first regional body to achieve a Free Trade Area (the COMESA Free Trade Area) in the year 2000.
Before being a part of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) the ambassador worked as the Head of the Industrial Promotion Department at the Ministry of Industry in Kenya. He was also the Secretary to the Industrial Sciences Advisory Research Committee (ISARC) and served as a Senior Economist at the Kenyan Industrial Survey and Promotion Centre.
He was the region’s representative during the negotiations for the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPAs) with the European Union (E.U.), the promotion of the AGOA (African Growth and Opportunity Act) which benefited all of the region’s stakeholders and the Doha Round of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
He holds an M.A. in Economics from the University of York, and a B.A. (Hons) in Economics from the University of Nairobi.
