In the age of foldable phones, sliding phones, phones with no headphone jack, ‘bezeless’ phones and the slimmest devices possible, smartphone manufacturers can no longer surprise us right? Well that assumption is wrong, absolutely wrong. My long walk on the streets of The Internet, brought me smack, in front of a Huge discovery; Energizer’s P18k Pop, the world’s first smartphone with an 18,000 mAh battery.
Growing up for me, was filled with television commercials about Energizer batteries and how durable they are. Somewhere along the line, the brand became a very distant memory for me. Imagine my surprise when I found out that same brand whose revenue is an estimated $3.4 billion (a staggering 339,014,000,000.00 Kenyan Shillings), is in the Smartphone realm now. That the phone in question, is actually from French company Avenir Telecom, which is licensing the Energizer brand for a range of devices with extended battery capacities, takes nothing away from that fact.
If you had to pick one aspect of a smartphone to improve, I am pretty sure battery life would be very high on your list. The Energizer P18K Pop caters to that and can allegedly last weeks on a single charge. Avenir also claims the P18K Pop device packs enough power for up to 90 hours of phone calls, 100 hours of music or two full days of watching videos. Energizer claims the P18K Pop’s Gigantic battery can also be used (wait for it), to jumpstart your car. Now that is one feature, I absolutely cannot wait to try out.
Energizer also says the device can charge other smartphones.
Apart from the battery, the P18K Pop’s other specs are also very impressive. I mean, the phone comes with no less than five cameras built in; three on the back and two front-facing selfie cams. The rear camera setup, has a 12-megapixel main camera backed up by a 5-MP and a 2-MP camera, which should give a decent depth of field.
Instead of having a notch into the screen, the front cameras are hidden away in a pop-up mechanism as seen in devices from Oppo and Xiaomi, among others. These two cameras are 16 MP and 2 MP respectively.
The screen itself measures 6.2 in and displays in a Full HD+ resolution. Under the hood, the phone is running 6 GB of RAM and has 128 GB of storage space.
Even with the impressive specs on other aspects of the P18K Pop (if you choose to ignore the absence of the headphone jack.), I still cannot stop thinking about its battery. 18,000 mAh!!
In comparison, other flagship smartphones, hover around the 2,000 mAh to 4,000 mAh range.
The only downside however, is the size as the P18K Pop is HUGE! Which should be expected, I mean all that extra power has to be stored somewhere?
The P18K Pop according to Engadget, is 18 mm (0.7 in) thick. Modern day flagships are usually 7 or 8 mm thick, so you’ll no doubt notice the extra luggage. If you frequently get around with a separate power pack in your pocket, it might be easier to just have the one device.
It will run on Android 9.0 and is expected to be released in June 2019. Its retail price, is yet to be announced.
So! Would you be getting this deice or would you rather pass?
