The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tesla; Elon Musk, has launched a humanoid robot christened the Tesla Bot. It will be running on the same Artificial Intelligence (AI) which is used by Tesla’s very own fleet of autonomous vehicles.
Although a functioning version of the robot was not presented during the Big Reveal by Elon Musk, a performer who was dressed as a Tesla Bot, performed an ‘interesting’ dance.
The announcement by Elon Musk which was unexpected, was made at the end of Tesla’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Day presentation. Apart from a couple of PowerPoint slides, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tesla provided very little details about the Tesla Bot.
It is expected that the Tesla Bot which is a 5 Foot 8 Inch robot, will weigh 125 pounds (56.699 Kilogrammes) and will be built according to Elon Musk, from “lightweight materials.”
The head of the Tesla Bot will be fitted with the same autopilot cameras that are put in Tesla vehicles. Said autopilot cameras will help the Tesla Bot be aware of its environment. It will also be fitted with a screen to display said information. It will be operating via the Tesla Full Self Driving computer internally.
According to Elon Musk, “It’s intended to be friendly,” “and navigate through a world built for humans.”
The Tesla Bot made an appearance after a 90 minute presentation which provided details regarding a number of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) upgrades coming to Tesla’s electric vehicles. The upgrades include the Dojo Supercomputer which will aid in training cars to navigate city streets without the help of humans. In the words of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tesla; Elon Musk, “It makes sense to put that onto humanoid form.”
Elon Musk provided slides with details regarding the proposed specifications for the Tesla Bot, emphasizing the fact that the Tesla Bot can both overpowered and outrun.
The Billionaire has in the past gone on record to warn against using robots as weapons and the risks that Artificial Intelligence (AI) could pose. He has even gone as far as describing it as “the biggest risk we face as a civilization.”
In the words of Elon Musk during a Question and Answer session that took place after the presentation, “We should be worried about AI.”
He added that, “What we’re trying to do here at Tesla is make useful AI that people love and is … unequivocally good.”
In one of the slides during the presentation it was revealed that the Tesla Bot would be able to get rid of “dangerous, repetitive, boring tasks.”
The CEO went ahead to give an example saying that the Tesla Bot could be instructed to “go to the store and get … the following groceries.”
Although that particular example is not exactly dangerous, it might be viewed as being boring repetitive.
Elon Musk who is known worldwide for ‘shaking tables’ with regards to what to expect in the future, touched on how he sees the Tesla Bot changing the future of work stating that, “This, I think, will be quite profound.”
He added that, “Essentially, in the future, physical work will be a choice. If you want to do it, you can, but you won’t need to do it.”
The Tesla Chief Executive Officer (CEO) made it known that a prototype will most likely be ready by next year; 2022. Even with a timeline in sight for the prototype, it might still take a significant amount of years before the Tesla Bot or any like it, would be able to efficiently handle our day to day activities.
