French retailer Carrefour which is ranked the world’s second-largest supermarket chain after Wal-Mart Stores is set to open one more branch along Uhuru Highway in Nairobi, taking tenancy of the Nakumatt Mega space which was vacated by the struggling retailer in September 2018.
Carrefour, whose local franchise is held by Dubai-based conglomerate Majid Al Futtaim, last July opened its sixth store at the Junction Mall taking up the space previously occupied by struggling retailer Nakumatt.
Its other branches are located at the Hub in Karen, Village Market, Two Rivers Mall, Thika Road Mall (TRM) and at Sarit Centre mall in Westlands.
The retailer also operates at the Junction mall along Ngong road and Galleria Mall.
Al Futtaim Retail Kenya’s country manager Frank Moreau in a statement on Friday March 29th said the opening of the new stores will help the company cement its growth plan in Kenya by stocking food and non-food items.
“Carrefour is set to take up the retail space on Uhuru Highway which was previously occupied by Nakumatt, becoming the main anchor in that building,” said Franck Moreau, country manager, Majid Al Futtaim Hypermarkets Ltd —the exclusive holder of French retailer Carrefour’s franchise in Kenya Friday.

“When fully operational later in the year, the store will stock food and non-food items, and host some of our specialist sections such as, fresh produce, groceries, a fresh bakery, as well as a butchery.”
He also noted that the retailer has finalized major refurbishment work at its stores located in Village Market, Junction and Thika Road Mall (TRM) to meet the retailer’s global standards and shoppers’ expectations.
These three stores now offer an abundant and lively marketplace that features butchery, fishery, delicatessen, cheese and home-made bakery sections and more.
In addition, Carrefour at The Junction Mall and Thika Road Mall will now stock garments, housewares, home linen, stationery, electronic products, kitchenwares, among other goods.

Carrefour has been on a major expansion plan, taking up spaces previously occupied by the now struggling local retailers Uchumi and Nakumatt at prime locations including Village Market, Sarit Centre, Junction, Galleria and Thika Road Mall.

According to London-based consultancy Oxford Business Group, Kenya is second to South Africa and doubles Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, in the level of development of formal retail shopping stores in Africa.
Carrefour has a total of 10,105 stores in 34 countries across Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, Russia and Africa.
