The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) together with the multi-agency team that is charged with fighting illicit trade, has seized over 1,600 cartons of alcoholic products with fake excise stamps.
The alcohol products, which were packed in 10 litre bottles and branded; ‘Fiesta Special Ice’, have a total market value of 12 million Kenyan Shillings. They were were impounded at a Thika-based plant in Kiambu County.
The multi-agency team had received intelligence information which revealed that a six wheeler lorry was carrying alcoholic drinks with excise stamps that were suspected to be fake.
The lorry was subsequently intercepted. Upon further verification it was discovered that the products it was transporting did have counterfeit or fake excise stamps.
The lorry was then taken to the factory where the illicit alcoholic drinks were being manufactured. Once there, more casks with fake excise stamps were confiscated.
After a verification exercise which was executed at the factory it was discovered that the manufacturer also operates two parallel production lines.
One of the production lines was hidden in a building close by and did not have an excise license. The other production line had Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) excise licenses.
The multi-agency team subsequently secured the premises as further investigation went on and impounded all the the products that were counterfeit.
On Thursday the 8th of October 2020 the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) announced its appointment of Rispah Simiyu as its Commissioner For Domestic Taxes. Rispah Simiyu, will be replacing Elizabeth Meyo who had been occupying the position of Commissioner For Domestic Taxes since April of 2019.
Mrs. Rispah Simiyu had been serving as the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)’s Deputy Commissioner in charge of the Tax Dispute Resolution docket. She will begin her new role as Commissioner For Domestic Taxes on Thursday the 22nd of October 2020.
