The Kenyan government will reportedly be constructing a cargo shed at the Kisumu international airport in March of this year (2021).
This news is according to Kisumu international airport’s Manager; Selina Gor, who stated that the move is part of plans to increase activities at the airport.
The Airport’s Manager included that that the Kisumu international airport’s transit shed, is also anticipated to help expand the airport’s cargo handling capacity via various plans to begin numerous exports which will include Horticulture.
According to Selina Gor, “We have key industry players in the horticulture industry, fresh produce, and export of flowers. We have partners who will help in developing transit cargo shed.”
The Kisumu international airport’s Manager also revealed that the airport intends to become a key cargo entry and exit point for the economic bloc at the lake region.
She added that, “Kisumu International Airport is strategically positioned within the Great Lakes Region and we want to turn Kisumu county in Singapore within the region.”
Selina Gor stated that the Kenyan government is looking at plans to upgrade the parking area for the airplanes and boost the size of the airport’s terminal ahead of the Africities summit in November 2021 as well.
The Governor of Kisumu; Anyang’ Nyong’o when commenting on the above, stated that the expansion of the airport will be vital for the development of the region as a whole as it will be giving hope to the farmers based in the area.
He also revealed that Kisumu County has the capacity to grow horticulture produce making it possible for numerous farmers including those who stopped sugarcane farmers as a result of the depreciation of factories, to be able to switch to horticulture.
The Governor stated that, “The airport will facilitate the export of fresh produce from Kisumu to the rest of the world to put money in the pockets of our farmers who have endured the collapse of the sugar industry.”
