Jambojet has reportedly hiked up its ticket prices for domestic flights by 37 percent. The decision is seen by observers as a direct result of an increased demand for domestic travel after the various COVID-19 lockdown restrictions were eased up and is expected to boost Jambojet’s revenue.

The airline which is a subsidiary of Kenya Airways, increased the ticket prices for five of its domestic routes; Eldoret, Diani, Kisumu, Malindi, and Mombasa.

Passengers going to Eldoret, Kisumu, Malindi and Mombasa from Nairobi, will now pay a minimum one way ticket price of 6,600 Kenyan Shillings, as opposed to the previous ticket price of 4,800 Kenyan Shillings.

Jambojet’s Acting Managing Director; Karanja Ndegwa revealed that, “As is the practice in the airline industry and in the transport sector as a whole, our tickets are priced on demand and supply basis. When the demand is high, our prices go up.”

The Acting Managing Director also stated that, “Additionally if you book your ticket closer to the date of travel, the prices are significantly higher than if you book and pay months ahead. This is why we always encourage our customers to plan and book their travel well in advance.”

The increase in ticket prices is coming at a time when airlines all over the world, are finally beginning to figure things out amidst the ongoing pandemic.

In August 2020, Jambojet sealed a deal with telecommunications giant Safaricom which would allow all of its passengers to pay for their flights with Safaricom’s Bonga Points. The move is seen as the airlines response and assistance to those passengers who due to economic difficulties brought on by the ongoing pandemic, might have a hard time paying for their flights.

The airline also increased its passenger capacity from 30 percent (after Kenya resumed domestic flights on the 1st of July 2020), to 58 percent.

As a result of the various COVID-19 prevention measures in Uganda and Rwanda, Jambojet has not resumed its flights into and from both countries.

Following approval from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), Jambojet will from the 2nd of October 2020, begin flying to various cities in Kenya without needing to make stops at Nairobi.

All flights from Eldoret and Kisumu to Mombasa and from Mombasa to Eldoret and Kisumu, will have a one way ticket price of 8,900 Kenyan Shillings.
